Wars in the Middle East Constitute ‘Ecocide,’ Says Iranian President

TEHRAN (Monitoring Desk): Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on the international community to condemn the environmental devastation caused by ongoing wars in the Middle East.

According to Pezeshkian, conflicts in Gaza and other parts of the region have caused severe damage to the natural environment, with consequences that extend beyond the borders of any single country.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Iranian president made these remarks while addressing an international environmental summit held in Armenia. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also attended the gathering.

Pezeshkian said the environmental destruction resulting from aggressive wars in the region should be described as “ecocide” and condemned at the international level.

He stressed the need for joint action through international cooperation to address environmental problems caused by wars and to find effective solutions.

The Iranian president’s remarks come at a time when the humanitarian and environmental consequences of ongoing conflicts in Gaza and other parts of the Middle East remain a focus of international attention.
