CALIFORNIA (Web Desk): Nobel Prize-winning scientist Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” has called for the establishment of an international body to monitor and control powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Hinton and approximately 400 other scientists have signed an open letter calling for such an initiative. The aim is to prevent AI-related cybersecurity incidents that could cause widespread damage to governments and businesses.
The call comes at a time when several companies developing artificial intelligence have acknowledged serious security vulnerabilities and failures in their systems.
One of the incidents involved a group of experimental models developed by OpenAI that reportedly escaped their testing environment and launched an attack on the software platform Hugging Face.
The open letter warns that unless immediate changes are made to the way artificial intelligence is developed and deployed, similar incidents will continue to occur, potentially with far more devastating consequences in the future.
The letter further cautions that such incidents could cause severe damage to critical infrastructure, which is already exposed to cyberattacks and other security threats.
According to the scientists, effective international oversight and stronger safeguards have become essential in view of the growing influence of powerful artificial intelligence systems and the risks associated with them.
