Israeli Strikes on Idlib Airbase, Syria and Türkiye Condemn

Damascus (Monitoring Desk) Israeli fighter jets targeted the Abu Zuhour airbase in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib, damaging the airbase’s runway.

According to Syrian state television, Israeli aircraft carried out eight airstrikes on the runway of Abu Zuhour airbase. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani strongly condemned the attack, calling it an unjustified provocation and describing it as a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to regional and global peace.

Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the Israeli attack and called on the international community to take effective measures to stop the escalation of Israeli actions against Syria.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, foreign fighters had previously been stationed at Abu Zuhour airbase, while Türkiye, a key supporter of Syria, was working to restore the airbase.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Türkiye and special envoy for Syria, said on the social media website that the United States was deeply concerned about the Israeli airstrikes on Abu Zuhour airbase.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Türkiye was deploying its forces at the airbase, which was why it was targeted. According to him, Türkiye’s presence in Syria poses a threat to Israel.

Qatar, Egypt and other regional countries have also condemned the Israeli attack.
