Major Relief for Power Consumers: Rs46 Billion Saved, New Plan to Avoid Costly Electricity

Islamabad (Pakistan News) – The Power Division Pakistan has announced a major relief package for electricity consumers, revealing savings of Rs46 billion under its peak relief strategy.

According to the policy statement, electricity was made cheaper by 71 paisas per unit from July to February, despite rising fuel costs. Officials stated that the relief was made possible through system reforms, special packages, merit-based dispatch, and improved planning.

The statement highlighted that electricity generation in the country is currently stable, with sufficient capacity to meet demand. However, increased consumption during peak hours remains a major challenge, often leading to reliance on expensive fuel sources.

To address this, the Power Division announced load management of around 2.25 hours daily between 5 PM and 1 AM. This measure aims to reduce the use of costly fuel and prevent a potential increase of around Rs3 per unit in electricity prices.

Furthermore, on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, about 80 MMCFD of local gas was supplied to power plants, helping avoid an additional increase of 80 paisas per unit. Without this intervention, electricity prices could have surged by Rs5 to Rs6 per unit.

The Power Division also instructed distribution companies to share load-shedding schedules with consumers, while emphasizing that timely closure of commercial markets could help reduce demand.

The government reiterated its commitment to providing maximum relief to the public despite challenging global conditions.
