Norway (Monitoring Desk): Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89. The Royal Palace said on Friday, August 28, 2026, that the King passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. at Oslo University Hospital.
Harald V ascended to the Norwegian throne in 1991 and remained on the throne for 35 years. He was among Europe’s oldest monarchs and was known in Norway for his simple personality and popularity among the public.
He had been ill for some time and was admitted to hospital on August 17, where he was receiving treatment for a blood disorder. His condition later became critical due to a bacterial infection in his blood.
Following the King’s death, his 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, has constitutionally assumed the Norwegian throne.
