Karachi (Commerce Desk): Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik chaired a meeting of Sui Southern Gas Company to review the organization’s performance and reform measures.
During the meeting, the federal minister directed the board to improve the company’s financial sustainability and address administrative issues. He said the existing gas subsidy mechanism and different pricing tiers need to be reconsidered, while moving toward fair and uniform rates for all consumers. Low-income groups should be supported through targeted social protection.
Sui Southern’s managing director said the gas transmission and distribution system had improved, while unaccounted-for gas consumption had declined by 57 percent. The briefing stated that gas supplies to K-Electric, industrial consumers and fertilizer plants were not being suspended, while domestic consumers were receiving gas three times a day.
The federal minister directed officials to immediately resolve gas supply issues in Balochistan. He emphasized tackling gas theft, technical faults and infrastructure bottlenecks, and instructed the board to focus on operational performance, revenue collection and efficient use of resources.
Ali Pervaiz Malik said reducing gas theft and losses was essential for strengthening the company’s finances. Gas prices have not been increased for a year, and the rise in the gas circular debt has been almost halted. The government is also working on comprehensive reforms in the gas sector with the support of the World Bank.
