LAHORE (Web Desk) — Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), Khurram Ali, has said that incidents of WhatsApp and bank account hacking are increasing in Pakistan, but a comprehensive action plan has been prepared to combat these crimes.
Speaking to the media, he said that a dedicated helpline for victims of WhatsApp hacking will soon be launched to assist users in recovering hacked accounts and provide guidance.
According to Khurram Ali, a public awareness campaign in local languages will also be launched in collaboration with Meta to educate citizens about ways to protect themselves from cyber fraud.
He said that following the campaign encouraging users to enable two-step verification, some reduction has been observed in WhatsApp hacking cases. However, cybercriminals are now using new methods.
The NCCIA Director General said that the increasing use of the internet and mobile phones has led to an overall rise in online fraud and cybercrime, while several cybercrime groups operating in Pakistan have also been arrested through international cooperation.
He added that efforts are underway to prevent the misuse of One-Time Passwords (OTPs) through modern technology and advised the public never to share the confidential OTP code received on their mobile phones with anyone, as this remains one of the main causes of WhatsApp and bank account hacking.
