London (Web Desk) – The United Kingdom has decided to introduce advanced artificial intelligence-based technology to determine the age of asylum seekers.
According to the UK Home Office, a pilot system based on artificial intelligence will be used on a trial basis from next year. The system will analyze photographs taken at the border to estimate a person’s age. The aim of this measure is to identify adult migrants who may falsely claim to be minors in order to benefit from the asylum system.
In the United Kingdom, unaccompanied minor asylum seekers are provided with special accommodation and care by local councils, along with legal protection that can make their asylum claims easier.
Official statistics show that more than 111,000 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year ending June 2025, which is a 14 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The Home Office said that by March 2026, more than 6,400 individuals who claimed to be minors had their age assessed, and 43 percent of them were found to be adults.
Human rights organizations and social activists have expressed concerns about the plan. Critics argue that relying on untested technology could violate the rights of child asylum seekers and that the results may not always be accurate.
