London (Monitoring Desk) — The United States has planned to end military assistance provided to Iraq’s Kurdistan region. According to British media reports, the security agreement between Washington and Kurdish authorities is set to expire in September, while the US Department of Defense has informed Kurdish leaders that the agreement is unlikely to be extended.
According to reports, Kurdish forces received approximately $61 million in military assistance from the United States this year. However, Washington has already begun reducing the aid, and the move is being described as part of a broader change in the US military role in Iraq.
Kurdish leaders have expressed concern over the end of American assistance, warning that the decision could create a power vacuum in the region and increase Iran’s influence.
