New Zealand (Sports Desk) — Cape Verde, which has reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, has suffered a major setback ahead of a crucial match.
According to details, team captain and experienced forward Ryan Mendes is under police investigation in New Zealand over an alleged serious case.
Media reports claim that a Brazilian woman who worked as a translator with the team during a FIFA series held in New Zealand in March has accused Ryan Mendes of allegedly forcing entry into her hotel room in Auckland and committing sexual assault.
Reports further state that the woman has provided police with alleged evidence of physical assault, including photographs.
However, no formal charges have been filed against Ryan Mendes so far. New Zealand Police said that legal action will be decided after forensic analysis and completion of the investigation.
FIFA said in a statement that it takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and is in contact with the relevant authorities, but cannot comment further due to ongoing investigations.
It is also noted that Ryan Mendes has played all three matches for Cape Verde in the current World Cup, and his legal situation has become a major concern ahead of the team’s important knockout fixture.
