Riyadh/Sana’a (Monitoring Desk) — Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group has claimed responsibility for a drone attack on Saudi state-owned oil company Aramco’s Jazan refinery, while Saudi authorities confirmed a fire at the refinery and said it had been brought under control with no casualties reported.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement posted on a social media platform that the group targeted the Aramco refinery in Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, with a drone.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy confirmed that a fire had broken out at the refinery but did not state its cause. According to the ministry, the fire has been extinguished, while relevant authorities are dealing with the incident and completing necessary procedures.
The Jazan refinery is an important facility for Saudi Arabia and the global energy market, with a capacity to process approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. In addition to gasoline, the refinery produces other petroleum products, including ultra-low-sulfur diesel.
It is worth noting that Aramco facilities in Jazan have previously been targeted in Houthi attacks, while Aramco facilities in the Red Sea coastal city of Yanbu have also come under attack.
