Oman (Monitoring Desk) Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, the Foreign Minister of Oman, has said that under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, it is the responsibility of Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz safe from all forms of threats.
He stated that if required, Oman is prepared to cooperate in regional and international efforts related to the protection and security of maritime routes.
According to the Omani Foreign Minister, Oman does not support imposing transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz; however, discussions could take place regarding voluntary fees in return for maritime, environmental and shipping-related services.
He further stated that these services could include the protection of shipping routes, measures against marine pollution and preparations for emergency situations, while consultations with relevant countries and shipping companies are also possible in this regard.
Earlier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi had stated that consensus had been reached with Oman regarding a joint strategy for the future management of the Strait of Hormuz and related matters.
According to him, technical committees will be established between the two countries and experts will begin special negotiations over the next seven to eight days in order to prepare a draft framework for the proposed arrangements and finalise matters related to maritime shipping lanes.
