Javed Akhtar Criticizes Decline of Indian Film Music

Mumbai (Showbiz Desk): Renowned Indian lyricist Javed Akhtar has expressed concern over the growing influence of Western culture on Indian film music and the lack of meaning in songs of the present era.

Speaking at the re-release of the film “1942: A Love Story,” Javed Akhtar said the influence of Western culture and cinema has led the younger generation to consider the traditional presence of songs in films unrealistic, which he finds regrettable.

He said the purpose of art is not merely to reflect reality but also to create beauty and enhance the audience’s experience. According to him, contemporary songs either use words with double meanings or present content that has no clear meaning.

Javed Akhtar also described changing filmmaking styles as a major reason for changes in music. According to him, songs have now often become limited to the background instead of being an important part of the story.

He questioned whether art should be restricted by the requirement to be realistic. According to him, the true value of a good song lies in enhancing the audience’s experience and giving them a sense of beauty and meaning.
