Islamabad (Pakistan Desk) The Government of Pakistan organised an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty, where it was emphasised that the treaty is not merely a legal document but an issue directly linked to the lives and economy of Pakistan's 240 million people, and that no compromise will be made on its protection.
The seminar, titled "Indus Waters Treaty: An Important Source of Peace and Regional Stability," was held in Islamabad and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, Indus Waters Treaty Commissioner Syed Mehr Ali Shah, former federal minister Khurram Dastgir Khan, international law expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi, as well as delegates and water experts from various countries.
Addressing the seminar, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar stated that the people of Pakistan have a complete right over the waters of the Indus River and that any attempt to obstruct water supplies would receive an effective response.
He said that for Pakistan, water is not merely a natural resource but an issue of national survival, while the Indus River forms the foundation of the country's agriculture and economy.
According to the federal minister, the Indus Valley Civilization represents Pakistan's historical identity and the Indus River has served as a source of life and development in the region for centuries. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to taking every possible measure to protect the waters of the Indus River.
