Lima (Monitoring Desk) – Peru has declared a 60-day state of emergency in response to the threat of severe rainfall and potential disasters linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
According to media reports, the measure covers 22 regions and around 796 districts, following an official decree signed by outgoing President José María Balcázar.
Authorities warned that meteorological forecasts indicate the El Niño pattern could persist until the summer of 2027, increasing the risk of heavy rains and flooding.
The emergency applies to key areas including Lima, Piura, La Libertad, Loreto, and the constitutional province of Callao.
Under the decree, regional and local administrations will implement emergency response, risk reduction, and recovery measures under the supervision of the National Institute of Civil Defense.
