Mexico (Sports Desk): In the final Round of 16 match of the FIFA World Cup, Switzerland defeated Colombia after a thrilling contest to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Both teams failed to score during regulation time and extra time, after which the match was decided by a penalty shootout. Switzerland defeated Colombia 3-4 in the shootout to claim victory.
During the match, both teams had limited clear opportunities to score. Colombia's Jhon Lucumí's header struck the crossbar, while substitute Jaminton Campaz's powerful shot was brilliantly saved by Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
In the final moments of extra time, Campaz had an excellent opportunity to win the match, but he failed to find the target.
In the penalty shootout, one center-back from each team failed to convert their attempts; however, Switzerland showed better performance and secured the victory.
Colombia failed to advance beyond the knockout stage despite conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, while Switzerland achieved a new milestone by winning a knockout-stage match for only the second time in World Cup history.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in the next match, where they will compete for a place in the semi-finals.
