New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): Global organisation Amnesty International has expressed concerns over amendments made to foreign funding laws in India regarding non-governmental organisations and critical voices.
Amnesty International, along with eight other human rights organisations, has called for the withdrawal of changes made to the rules under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
According to an Amnesty report, India's new foreign funding regulations are increasing restrictions on civil society oversight and limiting the right to freedom of association.
The report stated that thousands of organisations working in areas including human rights, policy research, public awareness, legal reforms, and government accountability could be affected by these regulations.
Human rights organisations maintain that India's existing laws are not in line with international standards and are imposing unnecessary and strict restrictions on non-governmental organisations.
