OGRA Urged to Act Over Risk of Artificial LPG Shortage

Islamabad (Commerce Desk): Amid concerns over the possible hoarding of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and the creation of an artificial shortage in the country, the Petroleum Division has written to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), requesting necessary legal and administrative measures.

The Petroleum Division’s letter states that LPG is being imported to meet domestic demand. However, reports have been received that, despite these imports, gas is not being regularly lifted from terminals.

According to the letter, this situation raises concerns about LPG hoarding, which could lead to an artificial shortage in the domestic market and an increase in prices.

The Petroleum Division has asked OGRA to take effective measures to prevent hoarding and ensure the regular lifting of LPG from import terminals, as well as its supply to areas where demand exists.

The letter directs OGRA to initiate the necessary legal and administrative proceedings and take measures to maintain an uninterrupted supply of LPG to consumers.

According to the Petroleum Division, consumers in mountainous and remote areas, as well as locations not connected to the national gas network, rely heavily on LPG. It is therefore essential to prevent artificial shortages and unjustified increases in gas prices.
