New York (Monitoring Desk) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Iran can reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States fulfills certain conditions.
Speaking to journalists and members of US think tanks in New York, Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran had presented a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz through mediators. According to him, the proposed conditions are not new but are the same points previously included in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The Iranian foreign minister said that Iran wants the agreement to be implemented before the US midterm elections. However, US President Donald Trump has said that the agreement could take place after the November elections. He made it clear that the timing of the agreement depends on the United States.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Abbas Araghchi discussed the Iran issue and the regional situation during a meeting in New York. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, both leaders said that there was no military solution to the crisis created by US and Israeli actions and that diplomatic means were the only way forward.
On the other hand, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Abbas Araghchi during a meeting that Britain would not tolerate threats, intimidation or any hostile activity by groups linked to Iran on British soil. The meeting also discussed the war in the Middle East, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and concerns regarding Iranian-backed groups in Britain.
The statement comes as the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre warned last week of attempts by cyber actors linked to the Iranian state to steal sensitive information through messaging platforms.
