New Burden on Electricity Consumers as Per-Unit Price Increased by Rs. 2.37

Karachi (Commerce Desk): Electricity prices across the country have been increased by Rs. 2.37 per unit under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September 2026.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued an official notification announcing the increase in electricity tariffs. According to the decision, the increase will apply to electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, and its impact will be reflected in November electricity bills.

It is worth mentioning that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested an increase of Rs. 2.56 per unit in electricity prices under the September monthly adjustment. However, NEPRA approved an increase of Rs. 2.37 per unit.

On the other hand, NEPRA has also decided to reduce the discounted rates offered to industrial and agricultural consumers for additional electricity consumption.

According to NEPRA's decision, a proposal has been made to limit the per-unit discount on additional electricity consumption to Rs. 2.32. The decision has been forwarded to the federal government for approval and implementation.

The federal government is currently providing industrial and agricultural consumers with discounts ranging from Rs. 11 to Rs. 15 per unit on additional electricity consumption. Under the new decision, the rate for additional electricity consumption is proposed to be increased from Rs. 22.98 to Rs. 25.30 per unit, with implementation scheduled from the November 2026 billing month.

NEPRA's decision was made on the basis of the chairman's casting vote, while two authority members, Amna Ahmed and Maqsood Anwar Khan, submitted dissenting notes, describing the proposed rate of Rs. 25.30 per unit as unjustified.
