Japan Approves New Law Criminalizing Intentional Insult of National Flag

Tokyo (Monitoring Desk): The Japanese Parliament has approved a new law making the intentional desecration of the country’s national flag a punishable offense.

According to the new law, anyone who deliberately burns, tears, or damages the Japanese flag in a manner considered insulting or disrespectful may face criminal action. If found guilty, offenders can receive a punishment of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 200,000 yen.

Officials said that the purpose of the law is to ensure respect for national symbols and maintain public order.

Supporters of the legislation argue that, like other countries around the world, Japan also has the right to protect its national symbols. However, opponents say such legislation could raise concerns regarding freedom of expression, particularly in cases where the national flag is used symbolically during protest activities.

The Japanese government has clarified that the law will only apply in cases where intentional and clear disrespect toward the flag is proven. According to the government, the purpose of the law is not to restrict the normal activities of ordinary citizens.
