Meta Likely to Face Increased Difficulties Over Child Protection Case

Brussels (Web Desk): The European Commission is considering expanding its ongoing investigation against Meta over the potential negative effects of social media platforms on children.

According to media reports, the main focus of the investigation is to examine whether the design and features used in Facebook and Instagram, which are intended to keep users online for longer periods, have been specifically developed to attract underage users.

Reports state that this development is being viewed as an important step toward enforcing stricter global regulations on the conduct of technology companies regarding the protection of minors. The European Union is preparing to release its initial findings on the design strategies of Facebook and Instagram, although a final date has not yet been announced.

According to the report, the European Commission is expected to take further action after receiving recommendations from a panel of experts next month, which could result in strict restrictions similar to those imposed in the United Kingdom and other countries.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has long faced criticism over the possible impact of its platforms on the online safety and mental health of young users. However, neither the European Union nor Meta has issued any official position or detailed statement on the matter so far.

Meta has been under strict legal and regulatory scrutiny since 2024 under the European Commission’s Digital Services Act regarding risks posed to children.

On the other hand, in March this year, a court in Los Angeles issued a significant ruling holding Meta and Google responsible for developing social media platforms considered harmful to teenagers and excessively addictive.
