Punjab Expands Electric Bus Service to Rural Areas

Lahore (Pakistan Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that electric bus services are being extended to rural areas for the first time in the province’s history, alongside several initiatives aimed at rural development.

In her message on World Rural Development Day, the chief minister praised rural communities for their contribution to agricultural production, food security, and national development, saying that a strong rural economy is the foundation of a developed Pakistan.

She said that villages play a vital role in the economic and social progress of any country. From agriculture to preserving centuries-old traditions, rural areas represent the true strength of society.

Maryam Nawaz stated that the Punjab government is taking practical steps to improve education, healthcare, skills development, sustainable employment, clean drinking water, modern agricultural facilities, and basic infrastructure in rural communities.

She added that the Suthra Punjab Program has, for the first time, been fully implemented in villages as well as urban areas, while electric bus services are also being expanded to rural regions for the first time.

According to the chief minister, the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” scheme has been introduced specifically for unemployed people in rural areas. She also highlighted the “Model Village” project, under which more than 2,400 villages are being provided with basic civic facilities, including water filtration plants, parks, and children's play areas.

She further said that more than 1,500 projects are underway under the Local Roads Program, covering the construction and rehabilitation of over 3,300 kilometers of rural roads. In addition, the “Sohne Pind Punjab De” program is focusing on paved streets, road repairs, children's parks, and tree plantation projects across villages.
