Rare Astronomical Phenomenon on Arafah Day: Sun to Align Directly Above the Kaaba

Dubai (Monitoring Desk) Astronomers in Dubai have reported that a rare celestial event will occur this year on the occasion of Arafah Day, when the Sun will pass directly above the Holy Kaaba.

According to experts, this phenomenon is expected to take place on May 27, 2026, at noon, corresponding to 9 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH (Arafah Day). At that time, the Sun will be positioned directly over the Kaaba, causing shadows in Makkah to nearly disappear.

The Kaaba in Makkah experiences this solar alignment twice a year due to its geographical location at approximately 21.4 degrees north latitude. During this period, the Sun appears to move between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer.

Experts say that this year is notable because the phenomenon coincides with Arafah Day, making it a rare occurrence. The last time such alignment happened was in 1993. This synchronization between the lunar and solar calendars occurs roughly every 33 years.

Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology has clarified that this is a natural astronomical event and is not necessarily linked to extreme temperature changes.

A spokesperson stated that weather conditions depend on multiple factors, including humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure—not just the position of the Sun.

He further added that the phenomenon is monitored annually as part of routine observations, and the public is advised to rely only on official and verified sources for weather-related information.
