Tehran (Monitoring Desk): A historic funeral procession for Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei began in Tehran on Monday, with millions of mourners expected to take part in the ceremonies.
According to Iranian state media, Khamenei’s coffin, draped in the national flag, is being transported through the capital’s main streets on a special vehicle. The coffins of his family members, who were reportedly killed in an airstrike on February 28, are also part of the procession.
Reports said the funeral procession will travel to Mehrabad International Airport, where arrangements will be made for the next stage of the burial.
Iranian authorities have implemented extraordinary security measures for the event. Several major roads in Tehran have been closed, restrictions have been imposed on airspace, and many public and private institutions remain closed during the mourning period.
The government expects millions of people from across the country to attend the funeral and memorial ceremonies to pay their final respects.
According to an official statement, the mourning ceremonies will continue until Thursday, after which Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest in the courtyard of the shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown of Mashhad.
Meanwhile, international media reported that diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, and a permanent end to the conflict have been postponed until the funeral ceremonies are completed.
Political analysts say the ongoing mourning and funeral ceremonies carry not only deep religious significance but also considerable political importance, drawing close attention from the region and the international community.
