Growing Concerns Over Challenges Faced by Minorities in India

New Delhi (Monitoring Desk) Concerns are increasing over issues faced by minorities and incidents of religious tension in India’s Maharashtra state.

According to reports, incidents of violence against Muslim and Christian communities, along with damage to places of worship and properties, have increased in India, raising concerns among minority communities regarding their security.

According to the Indian magazine Hindustan Gazette, Muslims in the village of Arla in Maharashtra’s Sangli district are facing economic difficulties following alleged attacks. The report stated that after an event held on June 9, a situation of economic boycott emerged, as a result of which some local people limited or ended business dealings with Muslims.

On the other hand, according to The Indian Express, Maharashtra Finance Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has announced that all lands owned by Christian missionary organizations will be reviewed. Earlier, a Christian delegation had requested protection from Mumbai Police following alleged threats.

Human rights activist Harsh Mander said that questions are being raised regarding the rights of religious minorities and equal citizenship status in India.

Critics say that incidents targeting Muslims, Christians and other marginalized communities have further highlighted the debate over India’s secular identity.
