Florida (Web Desk): A minor user from the U.S. state of Florida had accused Google's video-sharing platform YouTube of contributing to issues such as stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation among children, leading to a new legal challenge for the company.
YouTube has now reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by a 15-year-old teenager concerning addictive patterns associated with the use of social media platforms.
The lawsuit argued that various social media platforms are contributing to an increase in mental health issues among children and adolescents.
According to court documents, the teenager chose to remain anonymous and used the initials "RKC", alleging that YouTube and other social media companies design their platforms in ways that encourage users to become dependent on continuous usage.
Responding to the matter, Google's spokesperson, Jose Castaneda, said that the case had been resolved amicably and that the company remains focused on providing age-appropriate products and improved parental control features.
The teenager has also filed lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, and Snap Inc., with hearings expected to begin in Los Angeles on July 27.
The case is expected to become the second major lawsuit among more than 1,000 similar cases currently being heard in California, all of which are being overseen by Judge Carolyn Kuhl of the Los Angeles Superior Court.
