Karachi (Commerce Desk): Ship recycling operations have resumed at Pakistan’s Gadani Shipyard after a long gap of eight years, with seven ships already anchored for recycling.
Efforts by the National Logistics Cell (NLC) and other organizations involved in the Maritime Task Force have helped revive the ship recycling industry in Gadani. The initiative is expected to boost Pakistan’s maritime and industrial economy.
Reforms are continuing to bring the ship recycling sector in line with international standards, while the federal government has officially granted industrial status to the industry. In addition, ship recycling yards are being modernized according to the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Out of Gadani’s 16 ship recycling yards, nine have been upgraded to meet the standards of the Hong Kong Convention, while the remaining seven yards have also entered the inspection phase.
The government plans to establish modern treatment, storage, and waste disposal facilities in Gadani, which will help protect the coastal environment and marine life.
According to officials, each recycled ship can contribute approximately $25 million to the national economy. Once fully operational, Gadani will be able to meet around 30 percent of the country’s steel scrap requirements.
The revival of the ship recycling industry is being considered an important development for Pakistan’s maritime economy, employment opportunities, and industrial growth.
