Switzerland (Web Desk) – Solar panels are usually installed on rooftops or open spaces to generate solar energy, but Switzerland has started a unique experiment using railway tracks as a source of electricity generation.
In the Swiss region of Buttes, company Sun-Ways installed special solar panels on a 100-meter-long railway track, which are capable of generating electricity despite the movement of trains.
According to the company, these solar panels are designed in a way that they can be easily removed when required, ensuring that railway maintenance and other operations are not disrupted.
Under the project, 48 photovoltaic panels have been installed on the railway track, capable of generating a total of 18 kilowatts of electricity. A notable feature is that the panels are not damaged by passing trains.
According to reports, the solar panels installed in May 2025 have generated more than 16,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity so far, enough to meet the annual energy needs of several homes.
Sun-Ways said the experiment will continue until 2028. The company stated that installing such solar panels on one kilometer of railway track could generate around 200 megawatts of electricity annually, enough to meet the needs of approximately 60 homes.
According to the company, the project demonstrates that existing infrastructure can also be used for environmentally friendly energy production without requiring additional land, agricultural areas, or natural spaces.
