$6.3 Billion Binance Theft: Hackers Used Fake Job Interviews to Launch Cyberattack

LONDON (Commerce Desk): An investigation is underway into the theft of assets worth $6.3 billion from Binance, a leading cryptocurrency trading platform. In its preliminary report, the company revealed that hackers planned the attack using fake job interviews and malicious software concealed in advertisements.

According to the report, the cyber attackers gained access to the computers of two software engineers through fake job interviews. They subsequently used a third engineer’s computer to steal the funds. The hackers, allegedly linked to North Korea, reportedly spent several months developing an organised plan to deceive the company’s engineers.

Binance said its security team thwarted 57 cyberattacks allegedly linked to North Korea in 2026. The attacks involved fake interviews, malicious programs disguised as development software, modified software packages, browser extensions and fraudulent video-conferencing applications.

Citing information from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the company blamed North Korea for the attack. However, Pyongyang has denied the allegation.

Binance said assets worth approximately $2.85 billion had so far been frozen or blocked, while the company had covered 98 per cent of the value of the affected tokens using its own resources. The company stressed that customers would not bear the financial losses resulting from the cyberattack.
