Beijing (Web Desk) — A Chinese industrial regulator has warned users and organizations about an alleged security backdoor in Anthropic’s AI coding tool, Claude Code.
According to China’s National Vulnerability Database (NVDB), the alleged backdoor could allow the software to transmit users’ sensitive information, including location and identity-related data, to Anthropic’s servers without authorization.
Claude Code is an AI-powered coding tool capable of generating computer code, identifying and fixing software bugs, and analyzing code based on user instructions.
The report stated that Anthropic has restricted direct access to its products in China and several other countries. However, users can still access the tools through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or third-party proxy services.
The NVDB, which operates under China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said in a statement published on its website that recent investigations had identified security risks in Claude Code that could pose serious threats to both users and organizations.
According to international news agencies, Anthropic has not yet issued an official response or comment regarding the allegations.
The Chinese agency has advised users and organizations to immediately review their systems and either uninstall the software or update it to the latest secure version if the alleged vulnerability has been addressed.
Meanwhile, Chinese technology company Alibaba has also decided to ban its employees from using Claude Code starting July 10 due to security concerns.
It is worth noting that Anthropic had previously accused Alibaba of copying its artificial intelligence models.
