Islamabad (Web Desk) — The government has accelerated work on the National Connectivity Plan to promote the digital economy and modernize internet facilities across the country.
According to sources, on the directives of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of IT will finalize the plan soon after consultations with all relevant institutions. The project includes legal reforms related to the telecom sector, new policies, and a clear determination of responsibilities for companies.
Under the National Connectivity Plan, special focus has been given to the promotion of 5G technology and expansion of fiber internet networks. The government aims to provide high-speed internet at affordable rates to freelancers, IT professionals, and general users.
The plan also includes measures to ensure access to high-speed internet in small cities, rural areas, and remote locations. A proposal to provide fixed broadband facilities in government offices, educational institutions, and healthcare centers is also under consideration.
According to sources, the proposal to provide tax relief for internet users in remote areas is also being reviewed. The government has set a target to increase the average fixed broadband speed from 30 Mbps to 85 Mbps.
The government plans to include Pakistan among the world’s top 50 countries in terms of broadband performance, while the country currently ranks 92nd.
Under the plan, the target has been set to increase the fiberization of mobile towers from 16 percent to 60 percent within the next three years. The proposals also include reducing fiber network installation costs, eliminating fees, and introducing a one-window system for all necessary approvals.
