LAHORE (Showbiz Desk): The 13th death anniversary of renowned singer Reshma, who earned worldwide recognition for her mesmerising voice and distinctive folk singing, is being observed today with great respect and admiration.
Born in Rajasthan in 1947, Reshma's family moved to Karachi after the partition of the subcontinent. Belonging to a nomadic family, the legendary artist began singing Sufi poetry at a very young age.
Reshma never received formal training in music. Radio producer Saleem Gilani heard her singing at the shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, after which she got an opportunity to perform on Radio Pakistan at the age of just 12.
Following the launch of Pakistan Television in the 1960s, Reshma began singing for television and gave several memorable songs to Pakistani films. Her popularity extended beyond borders to India, where her voice was also widely admired in Bollywood.
Her famous songs, including “Lambi Judai” and “Gul-e-Sehraai”, remain popular among music lovers to this day.
In recognition of her artistic contributions, the Government of Pakistan honoured her with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Legends of Pakistan awards.
It is worth mentioning that Reshma passed away in Lahore on November 3, 2013, due to throat cancer.
